The Board approves funding for fire safety gear, additional sheriff’s deputies, and community events, while continuing to focus on infrastructure and neighborhood improvements.
The East Aldine Management District (EAMD) Board of Directors held its regular meeting on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, with discussions and actions that highlighted the district’s ongoing commitment to public safety, community development, and neighborhood enhancements.
Public Comments Emphasize Safety, Education, and Community Needs
Residents and community leaders addressed the Board on topics ranging from traffic safety and speeding concerns near Aldine Westfield and Lauder Roads to education initiatives and community resources.
- School leaders: Mead Middle School Principal José Lara-Collazo requested support for a project-based learning grant to continue the school’s student achievement gains; Avalos P-TECH Principal Dr. Cierra Nickerson introduced herself and invited the community to the school’s September 17 open house.
- Higher education partners: Lone Star College-East Aldine Dean Reyna Gómez Tippetts and financial aid advisor Ana Marcela Moros expressed appreciation for EAMD’s scholarships and requested opportunities to highlight student success stories.
- Residents: Several residents expressed gratitude for beautification efforts while urging more focus on traffic, litter, water projects, and continued opportunities for lifelong learning.
Financial Report Shows Strong Position
The EAMD’s financial report reflected continued fiscal responsibility, with most spending categories under budget. As of July 2025, the EAMD reported more than $20.3 million in funds on hand. Sales tax revenues remained strong, showing a 7.4% year-to-date increase.
Public Safety: Expanded Support for Law Enforcement and Fire Department
The Board approved multiple public safety initiatives, including:
- Renewal of its agreement with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, adding two new deputies for a total of 25 assigned to East Aldine.
- Funding critical replacement of personal protective equipment (PPE) for Westfield Fire Department firefighters and apparel for its growing Fire Explorer program, totaling more than $113,000.
- Decision not to renew the interlocal agreement with the Harris County Attorney’s Office for civil enforcement services.
Monthly safety statistics for July included 97 felony arrests, 1,614 calls for service, and 402 traffic stops.
Infrastructure and Mobility Updates
Executive Director Richard Cantú reported progress on several infrastructure projects:
- Keith-Wiess Park Trail Connections Project: Design is complete, permitting is nearly finalized, and construction is expected to begin in late 2025.
- Gloger Street Sidewalk Project: Design phase underway.
- Aldine Westfield Road Widening & Reconstruction Project: The City of Houston submitted the project to the Houston-Galveston Area Council, where it received a high ranking for potential funding.
The Board also approved water and sewer project funding, including advancing Phase IV of the Hartwick Sanitary Sewer Extension Project through refunds from earlier phases.
Community and Economic Development Initiatives
Board actions included:
- Approval of $20,000 for Lone Star College-East Aldine’s Student Success Support Fund and $14,130 for Mead Middle School’s project-based instruction program.
- Sponsorships for community events and organizations, including the Lone Star College Foundation Celebration Circle, Greens Bayou Coalition Regatta, Houston State of the City luncheon, and Precinct2Gether Golf Tournament.
- Expansion of the Shop Local program with an additional $20,000 to sustain its rewards initiative, which has generated more than $1 million in local economic impact since 2024.
- Vibemap, a digital app platform highlighting East Aldine businesses, art installations, and community events, is now live.
The Board also approved hosting a First Responders Appreciation Reception in October (up to $45,000) and sponsorship of Aldine Independent School District (Aldine ISD) Police Department’s Trunk-or-Treat event ($5,500).
Arts Council Discussion on Gateway Projects
The East Aldine Arts Council presented updated cost estimates for East Aldine’s Gateway projects. While acknowledging the potential economic and community benefits of public art, several Board members emphasized prioritizing essential services such as safety, infrastructure, and neighborhood improvements before pursuing large-scale art installations.
